An Attitude of Gratitude

Can you think of 10 things right now that you are grateful for in your life?  Great!  Now can you do that every single day?  That's where it gets tricky.  Here are some ways to have an attitude of gratitude on the daily yo!

I have always lived a comfortable, relatively happy existence.  But it wasn't until 8 years ago that I really started enjoying life.  Yes, hubby, I met you around that time.  And yes, you've improved my world beyond description...but outside of that, I made a fundamental change in my life.  I made a decision to become conscious of my thoughts every single day and focus on the positives in life at every opportunity.

I can't begin to tell you what a positive impact this has had on me.  Here are some of the things I do every day to maintain an 'attitude of gratitude'.

++ Be Aware of Your Thoughts ++
I know not everyone will agree with me, but I believe that we are all solely responsible for our own thoughts and actions.  We cannot blame anyone else for how we act and who we are.  If you want to practice gratitude daily you first have to be aware of your thoughts.

++ Replace Bad Thoughts with Good Thoughts ++
When life gives you lemons...that old chestnut!  I'm convinced that worry, doubt and negativity are just part of human nature and/or our society.  Everyone has their bad days.  I'm a natural born worrier.  So this has been a constant effort for me.  But each time I find myself thinking something negative, or worrying needlessly, I try to stop and replace that thought with something positive.

++ Practice Gratitude on the Daily ++
Say thank you.  All the time, to yourself and everyone else.  Appreciate the small things in life as well as the big things.  They all make a difference.  This will change the way you look at the world as long as you can train yourself to do it.  There are SO MANY things to be grateful for all the time, everywhere.  Don't fall into the trap of taking them for granted.  This is an ongoing effort for me but I think I'm getting quite good at it.  I find myself saying thank you to inanimate objects like green traffic lights and empty parking spaces.

++ Have a Vision for Your Life ++
You could be 19 or 92.  Everyone has to have something to wake up for each morning.  What's important to you?  What do you strive to do or be every day of your life?  At this very moment my life's goal/vision is for hubby and I to retire young and take little man around the world to explore everything our heart's desire.  On a smaller scale I strive to be a better Mom every day, maintain my independence, and make time for the things I'm passionate about...like this blog!

I've read a few books on the subject that have really helped me find gratitude practices that work for me.  Anything by Rhonda Byrne is a winner in my book (hehe).  And if you want to get really profound and deep The Happiness Hypothesis is great beach reading.  Don't forget your fruity, mini-umbrella (or sparkler) adorned drink!
